Streetwise Opera, a charity that combines the two seemingly different worlds, was formed by opera critic Matthew Peacock, who volunteered after a Conservative cabinet minister famously said: “The homeless are what you step over when you come out of the opera.” In an historic first for the U.S., the Philharmonic, Ballet and Opera in Dayton, Ohio, have merged to form a new entity, with each maintaining its own artistic director, but a single board running the Arts Alliance.

Wireless Connections in New Sony AVR – The networked $499 STR-DN1010 AVR from Sony – now available – is the industry’s first to offer built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay. It can be controlled from a free app available for iPhones and Android phones. The 7.2-channel component is 7×140 watts into 8 ohms and has Dolby ProLogic IIz post-processing for front-height channels. Via Wi-Fi it streams music from Sony’s Music Unlimited, Pandora, Slacker and vTuner, as well as DLNA- and AirPlay-enabled computers.
