Classical Recording Foundation 2007 Award Winners – The Classical Recording Foundation applies the model of philanthropically-supported live concerts to the recording of new classical performances. Since its founding in 2002 it has supported more than 20 new recordings. Each Award is tied to a fund administered by the Foundation and the participating record label, to record and promote the awardee’s recording project. Internationally-renowned artists and scholars make the nominations. This year’s Awards will be presented at a ceremony on October 30 at Carnegie Hall. The 2007 Awards are in three categories. Pianist Simone Dinnerstein and cellist Zuill Bailey are recipients of the Samuel Sanders Collaborative Artist Award, for their recording of the Beethoven Works for Piano and Cello on Delos. Pianist Vassily Primakov receives the CRF Young Artist Award for his recording of Beethoven piano sonatas, to be released on the new label Constant Records. Finally, the CRF Composer of the Year is Justin Dello Joio, to received his award for the first recordings of three of his recent works on Bridge Records. Composer John Corigliano will present the award to Dello Joio.

The system uses headtracking technology so that the sound sources always retain their acoustic positions even if the listener moves his head, which is crucial to creating surround sound that is as convincing as a multi-speaker 5.1 channel home surround system.
Keyboardist Joe Zawinul Dies at 75 – One of the creators of jazz fusion, acclaimed for his work with Miles Davis, Weather Report and the Zawinul Syndicate, passed away yesterday. He was a jazz pioneer, active as a bandleader and composer. He owned his own Birdland Club in Vienna.
