Audio Over Wiring Already in the Home – Powerline Carrier Technology, going by the trade name of HomePlug, is seeing more use in retrofit home distribution systems due its lower cost in achieving multiroom audio systems without installing any new wiring in the home. Stereo music and control signals can be send thruout the home using its existing AC wiring. One system is a DIY plug-and-play approach called the IO Gear Powerline Stereo Audio System. It has a base station with built-in iPod dock and stereo audio adapters. The base station goes in your main room and the audio adapters in any other rooms where you want music. A more advanced system is Russound’s Collage Powerline Media and Intercom System. It has an amplified in-wall keypad for each room, with 30 watts of power and small color display. Each keypad has an FM tuner and media manager which connects the system to a home’s Ethernet network for content sharing between zones. A pair of in-wall speakers would need to be installed in each room. NuVo Technologies is developing the Renovia six-source multiroom system which can supply as many as 12 rooms. Audio sources such as CD players will connect to the source hub, which comes with built-in AM/FM tuner and satellite radio tuner. Both of these systems need professional installation.
