Dave Corbus – Sound Down – Jazzed Media JM 1030,  49:34 ****:

(Dave Corbus, guitar; Lindsey Horner, bass; Lieven Venken, drums)

Denver’s Dave Corbus began his musical journey as a self-taught guitarist. His first love was rock and blues guitar, but after exposure to Pat Metheny and vibist, Gary Burton, Corbus was bitten by the jazz bug.

He attended Boston’s Berklee School of Music and graduated with a degree in Music Composition from NYU. Weekly gigs with a trio in New York City honed his jazz chops. He moved to Denver in the early 90s, where he presently holds court playing with locals such as Pat Bianchi, as well as being a first call sideman for touring national talent. He has three prior CD releases.

On his new Jazzed Media release, Sound Down, Corbus fronts a bass and drum trio. This CD’s song selection is eclectic, including tracks by saxophonists, Joe Farrell and David Murray, as well as Kenny Barron’s Sunshower.

Corbus’ guitar lines are clean and fluid and bring to mind Wes Montgomery with shadings of Pat Metheny. Corbus’ interplay with bassist Horner and drummer Venken is exceptional and a pianist is not missed as Corbus lead is so strong and his conversation with bassist Horner is so intriguing. Sound quality is audiophile heaven with a perfect mix of all the instruments.

Favorite tracks of mine include the title track; Bluesette, and the ballad, All the Time in the World. There is not a weak track on this CD. It well deserves national exposure. Jazzed Media’s Graham Carter continues to deserve kudos for giving major label exposure to deserving Rocky Mountain jazz artists.
