Electric Light Orchestra – All Over The World: The Very Best of ELO; Epic/Legacy CD ****:

ELO was really popular along with other classic rock bands from 20-30
years ago, but their music always managed to stand out.  Similar
to bands like Queen, ELO wasn’t afraid to try new sounds and
combinations of instruments that often would sound strange, yet
interesting.  From electronic sounds, to backward recorded vocals,
to the use of violins and cellos in songs like “Evil Woman,” the band
was always pushing the pop/rock genre.  Jeff Lynne (singer,
songwriter, lead guitarist and producer) was one of the biggest forces
behind the band and in the late 80s began to produce albums for other
artists like George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Paul
McCartney.  From the period between 1974 and 1986 the group had 20
Top 40 Hits.  I happen to have an older greatest hits disc, and
the only song on there missing from this collection is “Can’t Get It
out of My Head.”  Luckily, I have this song on the El Dorado
album, so I’m not too concerned.  What you get additionally that
isn’t on that record is songs like “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Shine A
Little Love” (a disco number), “All Over the World,” and the guilty
pleasure from the movie of the same name, “Xanudu.”  Some of the
other songs are less known, but still decent tracks.  If you
haven’t been introduced to the wonders of Electric Light Orchestra,
this disc will be a nice introduction to the band.

Songs included are:  Mr. Blue Sky; Evil Woman; Don’t Bring me
Down; Sweet Talkin’ Woman; Shine A Little Love; Turn To Stone; The
Diary of Horace Whip; Confusion; Hold On Tight; Livin’ Thing; Telephone
Line; All Over The World; Wild West Hero; Showdown; Ma-Ma-Ma Belle;
Xanadu; Rockaria!; Strange Magic; Alright; Rock ‘N Roll is King.
