This disc was preceded with an immense amount of hype from the major audiophile-oriented resellers. A new artist, on Groove Note Records, an instant slam dunk, yes? No! I’ve tried to listen to this disc repeatedly over the last few days, and with the exception of a couple of pretty good tunes (My Funny Valentine, in particular), I just can’t enjoy this recording. Not that the recording is bad – it’s superb in every way possible from an acoustic standpoint – but, the vocals have a sophomoric quality that makes it damn near impossible to embrace this disc. Maybe I’m being a little jaded, because there are so many trying to make a go of this repertory, but very little here by Ms. White seems to work. She seems to have a great deal of promise, it’s just not realized on this disc.
