Mario Adnet & Philippe Baden Powell – Afrosambajazz: The Music of Baden Powell – Adventure Music AM 1059 2, 68:33 *****:

“Afrosambajazz” explores the music of Brazilian guitarist and composer Baden Powell. Powell is considered to be Brazil’s greatest guitarist and he frequently combined classical guitar music with Afro-Brazilian rhythms and jazz chord progressions. He was an amazingly prolific musician and had a 40-year recording career. This CD is a tribute to Baden Powell by his son and pianist Philippe Baden Powell and record producer, arranger, and guitarist Mario Adnet, known for his years of working with another Brazilian legend, Moacir Santos.

Philippe and Mario took the songs of Baden Powell and arranged them into instrumentals within the big band context, and there are some differences between their two styles. Mario concentrates on an enveloping rhythm, while Philippe focuses on the purity of the melody line. Several of the session players from Mario’s work with Moacir Santos are back with this project. Jesse Sadoc on trumpet and flugelhorn is always a welcome addition, as are the baritone sax of Teco Cardosa and the tenor sax of Eduardo Neves. These are consistently some of the best session players working today. In addition to their arranging and producing duties, Philippe plays piano and Mario plays guitar on several tracks, and as a bonus Philippe’s brother Marcel Powell fills in on guitar on a few songs.

The energy is high in most of these songs and the level of musicianship is at the same level. And as for most of Adventure Music’s recordings, the quality of the recording is also quite good and very clean. There is an infectiously good feeling to the songs, aided by the accomplished percussion and rhythm sections, that amounts to sonic sunshine. It’s hard not to be positively affected by this CD. If you like Latin- and Brazilian-tinged jazz, as I do, this recording will be sure to please you. Highly recommended!
