MOZART: Piano Concertos Nos. 11-13 – Mark Bebbington, piano/ Orchestra of the Swan/ David Curtis, conductor – Somm 066, 78:07 ***(*) [Distr. By Albany]:

These three concertos were the only ones to see publication during Mozart’s lifetime. Those who know them love them, though they are not among the most often played. The composer himself indicated that they could be done for full orchestra with or without winds, or for string quartet. Here we have a modest orchestra making use of both full options (No. 11 done sans winds), and played by a very fine player, Mark Bebbington, who, while not known too much on the America shores, is making a bit of a splash in England, having been the recipient of some critical accolades.

I find nothing objectionable in his playing certainly; except for perhaps the last degree of intimacy afforded by one who sincerely desires communion with the Mozartian muse (Barenboim is particularly affectionate in his reading of these “middle” concertos). The orchestra, now taking up an additional residence in Birmingham Town Hall, has been the mainstay at the Civic Hall in Stratford-upon-Avon since its inception, and they play very securely, with good intonation and a firm sense of style. So while I would not recommend this to those happy with existing readings of these works, you do get a lot of bang for your buck, and this might suffice if the desire is present. Sound is clear, slightly close (but not claustrophobic) and warm.
