Nils Landgren & Joe Sample – Creole Love Call – Act Music 9707-2 [Distr. by Allegro], 52:06 ****:

(Landgren, trombone/vocals; Joe Sample, piano/Fender Rhodes; Ray Parker Jr., guitar/vocals; Chris Severin, doublebass; Raymond Weber, drums; Lenny Castro, percussion; Guest vocalist: Charmaine Neville)

What a wonderful testament to the power of jazz internationally! This album was recorded by a Munich jazz label in New Orleans and features a Swedish trombone player and vocalist together with the founder of the Jazz Crusaders – pianist Joe Sample. As a child, Landgren was exposed to original New Orleans jazz by his father, who said “Listen to this music, son. It’s the real stuff.”  He never stopped listening and playing this music and eventually satisfied the lifelong dream of his father’s of visiting New Orleans. Part of the connection was that Sample’s wife is Swedish.  Sample needed a trombonist in a hurry for a Crusaders recording session and enlisted Landgren when he was there, to his great surprise. It grew into the trombonist touring Japan with the Crusaders, and in this CD.

The dozen tunes are mostly pop songs of the South, with five entries by Sample, two by Allen Toussaint, one each by Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, and Steven Sills. The whole thing is wrapped up with Ellington’s classic early Creole Love Call as an instrumental – a tune which Landgren heard and loved madly as a young child. Landgren’s voice is an absolute delight – a bit of Willie Nelson, Bob Dorough and Steven Sills in it, and a straightforward very honest delivery that is free of the slightest show biz artificiality.  This is a voice with real personality – my sort of voice. The assistance from Ray Parker and Charmaine Neville on a few vocal tracks is just right – the arranging work was shared by Landgren and Sample. The trombone playing isn’t bad either, and Sample’s keyboard work behind everything makes the session jump.

TrackList: Get Out of My Life Woman, Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay, Nightlife, Soul Shadows, The Brightest Smile in Town, Don’t Take Your Love to Hollywood, One Day I Fly Away, With You in Mind, I Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Love the One You’re With, Same Old Story, Creole Love Call.
