TCHAIKOVSKY: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor – Arthur
Rubinstein, piano/ Boston Symphony Orchestra/ Erich Leinsdorf – xrcd
JVC JM-XR24023, 33:33 ****:

This 1963 discing was promoted as the first collaboration between
Rubinstein and Leinsdorf. I presume this warhorse can gallop off
without my notes on the music. The performance is outstanding but I
wouldn’t say necessarily the No. 1 Tchakovsky 1 to have. (Actually, I’m
partial to the one with Gilels as soloist.)  Sonics are
demonstrably cleaner and more detailed than on the CD reissue. I’m
disappointed that all three of these xrcds lack any English notes, with
everything in Japanese inside – not even an unreadable reduction of the
original LP back cover as many other xrcds have featured.
