Notes from a Moscow Pianist: Dmitry Paperno

Pianist, teacher and writer, Kiev-born Dmitry Paperno (b.1929) received his musical training at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, earning a Master’s Degree with Honors in 1951 and an Aspirant Diploma in 1955. A prize winner in the Fifth International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1955, and the First International Enescu Competition in Bucharest in 1958, Paperno proceeded to concertize throughout Russia and Eastern Europe as well as in England, Cuba, and Belgium – as soloist with the USSR State Orchestra at EXPO in Brussels, 1958.  He recorded for Melodiya, the record label for the Soviet Union. In 1967, Paperono began teaching at the Gnessin Moscow State Institute. He emigrated to the United States in 1976, and began to tour extensively. He took a Professorship at Chicago’s DePaul University in 1977, and served on the jury panel for several international competitions. He gave master classes in Belgium, Finland, Portugal, and the United States, including classes at Oberlin and the Manhattan School of Music. Paperno authored his Notes of a Moscow Pianist (Amadeus Press), which details his personal life and career.  The Chicago label, Cedille, maintained a strong catalogue of Paperno’s recordings, many made at WFMT between 1990-1991, from which this evening’s program derives.
