Tim Coffman – Crossroads – Blu Jazz    BJ#3340, 61:28 ***1/2:

Crossroads, the Tim Coffman debut recording on Blu Jazz features various combinations of group settings – sextet, quartet, and one duet (Coffman with bassist Kelly Sill on Alone Together).
Coffmans’s trombone playing has a smooth round tone bringing to mind JJ Johnson. His band mates are top notch and include the established Scott Wendholt on trumpet, and Mark Colby, on tenor and soprano sax.

Song selection tends toward hard bop ballad standards like Joe Henderson’s Step Lightly; Wayne Shorter’s Yes or No; and Freddie Hubbard’s Sky Dive. Other recommendations include Tom Harrell’s Sail Away and JJ Johnson’s Lament. Coffman did all the arrangements and the care and preparation over the two day recording session in Oct. 2004 is quite evident.  Add Tim Coffman to the list of young and upcoming trombone players continuing in the mainstream jazz idiom.

Tracks = Yes or No, Sail Away, Step Lightly, Crossroads, My Old Flame, Summer in Central Park, Sky Dive, Lament, Caravan, Alone Together
