Tonolo, Goldstein, Swallow and Motian – Your Songs, The Music of Elton John – Obliq Sound LC12269, 45 min. *****:

I never thought I’d hear a jazz band cover Elton John’s songs so eloquently instrumentally!  Like in a karaoke bar in Chinatown, I sing these songs as if they were my own.  Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (are you kidding me?) perfect!!!!!  Not to say this CD is just karaoke material, its superior quality musicianship makes the grooves so comfortable to sing along to.  I can’t imagine seeing these guys perform the songs live and see the crowd react.

Pietro Tonolo on tenor and soprano sax, Gil Goldstein on piano and accordion, Steve Swallow on bass and Paul Motian on drums make up this exquisite group.  You’ve really done EJ a service here – excellent work, would highly recommend the CD to any fan.  Hey guys, when does the Billy Joel CD come out?

TrackList: Blue Eyes, Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man, Your Song, The One, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, White Street (inspired by Elton John) and Epilogue : Semifonte.
