The WALTER LEGGE Award is presented each
year for
outstanding contribution to the world of recording
classical
music.

For 2005, this Award is presented in honor of the
late
President of Columbia Records, GODDARD LIEBERSON.
Goddard Lieberson
(1911-1977), joined Columbia in
1939. From a non existant department, he
built the
classical division of Columbia into one of the world’s
leading
classical recording companies.
He was largely responsible for the
introduction of the
LP record in the late 1940’s.
In the non classical
area, he made popular the
recording and issuing of original cast and
soundtrack
albums.
