An interesting romantic feature which has a well-disguised time-travel plot element but doesn’t focus strongly on it at all. An accomplished physicist mysteriously disappears when he goes on a business trip to Princeton. Turns out he just wanted to speak to Einstein, who was living there in 1946, but in the process got killed by a criminal and doesn’t return. His wife and son are abandoned and eventually the wife can’t take it anymore and commits suicide.

His son Erol, now grown up, uncovers the papers with the help of his grandfather—a professor at Princeton, plus formulas and a machine for time travel. He works to go back and restore his family thru the possibilities of alternative universes and wormholes. Like most time machine plots, this one requires a bit of logic-ignoring in order to move thru it.  The family emotions are well-explored. The effects of the family being left without knowing what happened are explored to the minimizing of the time travel apparatus, but eventually it does happen again, and all is made right.

Altho some of the time travel stuff may seem outrageous, the film is well-designed and sucks you in so that you are wondering what will happen next. The plot has a nice twist at the end, and Gillian Anderson is perfect as the grieving housewife.
