Laura Welland: Dissertation on the State of Bliss – Laura Welland, vocals; John Clayton, bass; Gerald Clayton, piano; Anne Drummond, flute; Mike LeDonne, organ; Russell Malone, guitar; Kenny Washington, drums – OA2 Records 22023,  55 min. **:

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder how records like this get made: a superb recording, featuring a nearly all-star cast of backing musicians with really cooking arrangements, all in support of an unknown singer who’s – unfortunately – in way over her head. Maybe it’s a favor for an old friend, an unfulfilled business obligation, who knows – but you see and hear this sort of thing frequently in the music business. I really don’t mean to rain on Ms. Welland’s parade, but the quality of her vocals is just not on the same level musically as that of the company she’s keeping. And while the album’s concept is a good one, this tried-and-true material requires a truly extraordinary effort to lift it above the mundane. Definitely a try before you buy.

Tracks: Dissertation On The State Of Bliss; Lot Of Livin’ To Do; I’ve Got A Crush On You/Dreamville; Young and Foolish; Fever; Ridin’ High; Trouble Is A Man; The Thrill is Gone; Where Do You Start?; Down With Love; By Myself; I Wish I Were In Love Again; I Wanna Be Loved; Before We Fall In Love; Taking A Chance On Love; Why Did I Choose You; Love Is Here To Stay.
