Universal Music Group releases an ultimate 4-LP vinyl collection of Sinatra’s best recordings at Capitol Records.

Sinatra Platinum – Capitol Records/Universal Music Group 5575097 4-LP set, *****:

(Frank Sinatra – vocals; Nelson Riddle – arranger; Billy May – arranger; Gordon Jenkins – arranger)

There may be no greater popular singer from the 20th Century than Frank Sinatra. While his career had its share of ups and downs, “The Voice” went from big band singer to solo renown with Columbia Records in the 40’s and early 50’s. In 1953, Sinatra not only resurrected his musical legacy, but became an icon when he signed with Capitol Records. With arrangers like Nelson Riddle, Billy May, Gordon Jenkins and Axel Stordahl, he embarked on an unprecedented string of recordings over eight years that redefined the “cool” culture. Additionally, he was a major success in moves, television and concert performance, unlike anyone before or since. His dramatic and breezy takes on the Great American Songbook captured the imagination of the public. His tonal control and breathing technique were perfect vehicles for up tempo numbers as well as ballads. The legendary timing and phrasing have drawn comparisons to jazz singers. In the approximately eight years at Capitol, Sinatra recorded over 300 songs, many of which are regarded as the finest collection of pop material ever released in the United States.

Universal Music Group has released a retrospective of those Capitol recordings, Sinatra Platinum. At the center of this memorable project is a 4-LP set that includes a bountiful 44-tracks (with several alternative and session takes). LP 1 kicks off with a  finger-snapping opus, “Lean Baby”. The next group of tunes are magnetic and unforgettable. “I’ve Got The World On A String” exudes the trademark swagger surrounded by lavish orchestration. Sinatra always had a strong affinity for Cole Porter. On “I Get A Kick Out Of You”, and “Just One Of Those Things”, he glides through the verse and chorus seamlessly with his uncanny ability to interact with a full band in up tempo mode. Ballads like “Young At Heart” and “In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning” are warm and delivered with nuanced articulation. Swinging  covers like “Learnin’ The Blues”, “You Make Me Feel So Young” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” are quintessential Sinatra. It’s hard to imagine any other singer taking on this material with the same artistic commitment.

Album Cover for Sinatra Platinum Vinyl PackageWhether it’s the textured reed-infused or string enhanced versions of “I Couldn’t Sleep A Wink Last Night”, “All The Way”, or  “Only The Lonely”, Sinatra distills the heartfelt emotion in the lyrics. He is beyond comparison on muscular arrangements like “The Lady Is A Tramp”, “Night And Day” and “Oh Look At Me Now”. The bar gets higher on“Come Fly With Me”, “Witchcraft” and “Nice ’N’ Easy”. He establishes an innate ability to pair tightly structured orchestration with his natural freewheeling style. His later catalog is varied with commercial ditties (“High Hopes”, “Day By Day”), meditative translations (“Here’s That Rainy Day”, “You Go My Head”) and gently swaying tunes like “The Nearness of You” and “Blue Moon”. The final LP has some previously unreleased material. Highlights include raw session takes from “Here Goes”, “Lush Life” and “Just In Time”. Sinatra’s pedigree as an interpreter of mood is present on songs like “One For My Baby” and “I’ve Got a Crush On You”.

This 4-LP Sinatra Platinum set is a definitive look at one of the greatest singers in history

at the pinnacle of his career. The sound mix (Larry Walsh/NBCUniversal Audio) is vibrant. It focuses on the mellifluous tones and range of this singer. The substantial “vintage ”folding book” album packaging is top-notch. This is also available on 2-CDs and digital. Sinatra fans and vinyl enthusiasts will be elated with this special vinyl set.
