While I can admire the Non Profit Music Foundation for its work, I am a little baffled when I read that they are an answer to “the presence of classical music today in the world, the gradual decrease of pupils at the highest levels in music schools, the lack of motivation from the audience to assist to performances of classical music (chamber music can be one example), and the loss of sensibility towards social and humanitarian action.” Seems to me that music schools have never been fuller, talent levels at an all-time high, and social and humanitarian action also at something of a peak. As for support of performances, well, has anyone considered the fact that outrageously high ticket prices may be an issue? Perhaps they are referring to the situation in Spain or the EU.
Anyway, this very well-played and interesting disc has much to offer us, spotlighting the considerable talents of violinist Ara Malikian. Space does not permit me the time to discuss all of these works individually; suffice it to say that no one should be put off by the esoteric names featured. Kurt Atterberg’s Suite is all anyone could ask for in terms of attractive melody and winsome performance; Michael Hurd and Jorge Grundman are also names not likely to trigger associations, but each has produced some wonderfully accessible music of grand attraction. I simply must point out the latter’s short String Trio No. 3 as a piece of consummate beauty. All in all, this is a quite worthy collection of unknown but eminently deserving composers if your interest is peaked. All of the profits derived from sales of this finely recorded and excellent-sounding release are devoted to non-Governmental Organizations (Doctors Without Borders and Medicus Mundi are two of the organizations mentioned on their website, if that helps). However, charities aside, this is a fine release well worth consideration. I am not sure about the “tears”, but there is beauty without question. Sound is warm and inviting, the playing beyond reproach.
