The Dave Brubeck Quartet Featuring Paul Desmond – On the Radio: Live 1956-57 – Acrobat Music – AMACD015, 71:21 ****:

(Dave Brubeck, piano; Paul Desmond, alto sax; Norman Bates, bass; Joe Dodge (1956) and Joe Morello (1957), drums)

A definite step up in recording quality and sound mix is found on Acrobat Music’s issue of the Brubeck Quartet, live from Basin Street Jazz Club in New York from Feb. 1956, for twelve tracks over at least three sessions, and lastly three tracks from a 1957 date at The Blue Note in Chicago.

Brubeck’s piano is clear and percussive and the inimitable Desmond shines as always with his “dry martini” tone.  Bop piano lines are featured and Desmond matches Brubeck in intensity, on Stompin’ for Mili. Desmond’s alto is super sweet on A Minor Thing.

In Your Own Sweet Way, The Trolley Song, and Love Walked In are classic Brubeck and Desmond ballads, and would be at home on any Columbia issue 60-70s issue – a nice compliment to the recording engineer for these takes. We also get an opportunity to get to hear the group’s opening theme, The Duke, three times over this CD, setting the stage for their evening sets.

Only the typical cheesy (but expected) radio announcer intros mar the classy mood that Dave and Paul set. This CD is a real step up from the Miles’ CD just reviewed.

TrackList: Theme and Intro #1, Stardust, Gone With The Wind, Stompin’ for Mili, Out of Nowhere, A Minor Thing, In Your Own Sweet Way, The Trolley Song, Intro and Theme #2, Love Walked In, Here Lies Love, All the Things You Are, Theme and Intro #3, I’m in Dancing Mood, The Song is You.
