For the tiny handful of people who might not know, the Simpsons are an animated television family currently enjoying a near twenty-year run on Fox.  Their big screen debut in The Simpsons Movie, finds Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie in for their greatest adventure yet.  Homer’s illegal dumping of pig waste into Lake Springfield triggers an environmental disaster and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reacts thereto by sealing off the entire town from the rest of the world.  The EPA then sets in motion a plan for the complete annihilation of Springfield.  Homer must learn to overcome his selfish tendencies in order to save his family, friends and hometown from almost certain destruction.  I am a big fan of The Simpsons television show and thoroughly enjoyed this film as well.  Nearly all of the characters from the show make an appearance in the movie and Homer is at his bumbling, hilarious best throughout.  The show’s animation has never looked better and the storyline for the movie is both clever and amusing.  With significant replay value for both children and plenty of on-the-mark satire for adults, I highly recommend this Blu-ray disc.

The high definition video quality of this Blu-ray disc is excellent.  Images are pristine with razor sharp detail.  Blacks remain consistently dark throughout the movie.  Colors are vivid and striking with nicely saturated hues.  Picture defect mastering is perfect with no major flaws or compression artifacts.  The overall audio quality is very good with the English DTS 5.1 core track serving as the basis for this review.  The soundtrack mix favors the forward soundstage.  Dialogue is crisp and properly positioned in the center channel.  The surround channels are moderately used for ambient sound effects and the music score, and include a small number of discrete rear effects.  The low frequency effects channel is deep and smooth.
