The Songs of Johannes Brahms Vol. 1 – Angelika Kirchschlager, mezzo-soprano/ Graham Johnson, piano – Hyperion 33121, 71:28 [Distr. by Harmonia mundi] ****:

Having completed sensational and landmark complete recordings of the vocal music of Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, and Faure, the indefatigable Graham Johnson now sets his sites on the considerable output of Brahms. For those familiar with the previous series, he will also use different vocalists for each disc, a wise choice in that it makes selective collecting of the set easier, and if one finds a singer that is not acceptable can make other purchasing decisions. But—there are very few, if any, in this entire series of hundreds of discs that are never less than serviceable.

Angelika Kirchschlager has a rich yet light mezzo, not a strong voice at all, so Janet Baker you will not be getting here. Her voice is also exceptionally suited to this kind of intimacy, and I found all these performance very pleasant listening indeed, suitably emotive but not overbearing, and particularly sensitive to the needs of the texts.

As the excellent and thoroughly exhaustive notes say—and these will I am sure end up in book form by the time everything is finished—each disc takes us on a journey through Brahms career. What this means practically is that the songs are not present chronologically but instead in the order on which the world first became acquainted with them. In some cases, as here, entire opus numbers will be given (Op. 48 on this disc) while others, like the folksongs, will be distributed among different singers on different discs. This might irritate a few people, but I find the concept winning indeed and quite appropriate. All in all, this is another bag of riches from Johnson to look forward to, and a great start to Brahms.
