CHRISTOPH GRAUPNER: Partitas for Clavier Vol. 4 =  Nos. 4,
5 & 6 – Genevieve Soly, harpsichord – Analekta AN2 9116, 64:01 ****:

Quebec-based musicologist and harpsichordist Soly is a specialist in
the music of the almost-forgotten contemporary of J.S.. Bach, Graupner.
This is the fourth in a series of CDs she has recorded  bringing
his music to new listeners. She is a leading figure in Baroque music in
the Canadian province. Graupner was another of the composer-performer
types of earlier times. He was one of the great harpsichordists of the
18th century, and his compositions show great imagination and the
ability to write in many differing idioms, which give his music more
variety than many composers of the period.

The Partita No. 4 was written for amateurs, in the easy key of D Minor,
but it doesn’t lack for fine musical qualities. No.. 5 is in the French
style and leaves plenty of room for ornaments. The 6th Partita has an
Italian inspiration and is even operatic in character.  Sonics are
fine, with the micing not too close to the instrument to pick up
annoying noises of the action.
