RAMEAU: Pieces de clavecin en concerts – Concertos Nos. 1 – 5 – Baroque Nouveau – Reference Recordings RR-119 HDCD, 64:19  *****  [Distr. by Allegro; Release date: Feb. 10, 09]:

This new recording of some of Rameau’s greatest hits features a new ensemble drawn from members of the SF Bay Area’s Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. The four players are harpsichord, violin, baroque flute and viola da gamba. Rameau arranged for chamber music presentation some of the most popular movements from his opera-ballets – which were as much about dance as they were about opera.

Each of the mostly-three movements in the concerts is named after a type of dance or a personage – such as La Rameau, or Menuets. The instrumental balance among the four instruments is perfect – especially as regarding the harpsichord – and the noise floor is extremely low, the recording having been made in the renowned studios of Skywalker Sound in Marin County, CA.  The hi-res 176.4K masters will later be released in Reference Recording’s HRx series for music servers.
