This was originally a B&W short which was expanded into a full-length feature.  Unlike many others of that ilk, it works. David Hyde Pierce certainly gets to ramp up his usual unique personality to hit you right between the eyes with often totally-unexpected violent actions that give the film a strongly creepy mood. The other main actor also does a convincing job as the sometime criminal who randomly ends up on Pierce’s doorstep following a partially-botched bank robbery.

The robber cons his way into Pierce’s home and soon both of them discover just how deceiving first appearances can really be.  With any other actor, the film probably would have suffered for its Grade B plot, but David Hyde Pierce—with his psychopathic version of his “Niles” character—becomes the perfect center of this suspense tale. I was reminded a bit of Dressed To Kill.  There’s quite a bit of graphic violence, but some of it is ameliorated later, showing it to be the character’s weird “playing” with makeup. The ending is a complete surprise and counters earlier feelings of the film not working out that well.
