Lyrical Landscape – Syrinx Flute Ensemble/Hiroshi Mochida plays RAVEL, BACH, OHMAE, GRUGER, JANEQUIN, MOZART, ELGAR & Others [TrackList below] – Camerata CMCD-28172, 1 hr. 9 min. [Distr. by Albany] *****:

What a glorious sound – and recorded with the utmost fidelity possible on standard CDs. Never mind that the note booklet is all in Japanese.  The flute ensemble has 14 members and from their onstage photo looks like they include two very large bass flutes with interesting pipe work at the top, as well as all the way up to piccolos.

The opening four excerpts from Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin are a delight, and the closing Elgar Serenade in e sounds lovely on flutes in spite of the original depending on the special timbre of the string section. In the middle are five Bach selections plus the complete Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G.  Bach always works perfectly in transcriptions, and these are no exception. One hardly misses the other instruments in the fine arrangement of the Brandenburg Concerto.

The short works by some probably unknown composers are also a fine addition to this excellent concert. One would think over an hour of just flutes would get tiresome, but I for one didn’t feel that at all.
