SPOHR: Symphonies No. 2 in d, Op. 49; No. 8 in G, Op. 137 – NDR Radio PO/Howard Griffiths – CPO
You can discern a really remarkable creative voice.
PROKOFIEV: Symphonic Suite from Semyon Kotko, Op. 81b; Four Portraits from The Gambler, Op. 49 – Scottish National Orchestra/Neeme Jarvi – Chandos
Semyon Kotko depicts events in the Ukraine following World War I, including the German invasion and the ensuing civil war in Russia.
NATACHA ATLAS – Ana Hina, with the Mazeeka Ensemble – World Village
Her repertoire ranges from classical Near Eastern ballads to wild Egyptian dance music.
BOISMORTIER: Six Concertos for Five Flutes, Op. 15 (1725) – Stephen Schultz, all flutes – Dorian Sono Luminus
Flute virtuoso Stephen Schultz has recorded all five flute parts himself via overdubbing.
The Stryker/Slagle Band – The Scene – Zoho
One of the better post-bop bands out there delivers a searing set of (mostly) originals.
Marc Johnson’s Bass Desires – Second Sight – ECM Touchstones ECM
A wise choice for the ECM Touchstones re-release series.
Knocked Up (2007), Blu-ray
Knocked Up comes from writer/director Judd Apatow, who also gave us The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and there’s even some overlap of actors from that uber-hilarious film.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Blu-ray
I found this film hilariously entertaining, if perhaps over-the-top in places, and with a boatload of redeeming qualities.
Conductor Fritz Busch = HAYDN: Symphony No. 88 in G Major; Sinfonia Concertante in B-flat Major; MOZART: Serenade No. 13 in G Major “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”; Symphony No. 36 in C Major, K. 425 “Linz” -Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra/Fritz Busch – Guild
More than one commentator has noted the similarity of the Busch energies to those of the demon Toscanini.
Legends, Live At Montreux 1997, Blu-ray (2008)
“Layla” still is as effective as ever and captures a simply spellbinding moment in time.
Jethro Tull, Live At Montreux 2003, Blu-ray (2008)
This excellent disc is maybe my favorite live concert recording of the last few years.
Editorial for October 2008
Welcome to Adobe GoLive 6 An appropriate compact ClearStream HDTV antenna will be shipped to six AUDIOPHILE AUDITION readers early next month for our October giveaway. (We reviewed some of the Antennas Direct antennas in April.) Model 1 is for Short Range reception, model 2 for Medium Range and model 3 for Long Range. The antennas are compact and omnidirectional, for indoor or outdoor use. We will check with the six names we select who have registered on the site this month as to which antenna they would prefer. Even if you have cable or satellite, OTA reception with an antenna gives you the best image from local stations, and it is also fine with analog TVs using a converter box. Check antennasdirect.com for more information. (Please mention your interest in an antenna in your registration comments.) The 12 winners of the Coastal Dawns Blu-ray environmental video in our September drawing are: Richard Gevara, Anchorage AK; Williams Ettuati, San Diego CA; Florencio, San Barnardino CA; Chris Quoc Nguyen, San Francisco CA; David Williams, Lexington Park MD; Russell Low, San Francisco CA; Scott Steinhaus, Glencoe MN; Bruce M. Scheiner, Levittown NY; Robert Wilkins, Mill Valley CA; Ruthe Taber, Portland OR; […]
