Portland Jazz Festival Review – Feb. 25-28, 2010
This year’s Portland Jazz Festival had many addresses. They varied from Alex Sipiagin’s Russia, Luciana Souza’s Brazil, to Christian Wallumrod’s Norway.
TELEMANN: Overture in F Minor; Concerto in D Major for Two Traverse Flutes; Concerto in F Major; Concerto in B-flat Major for Two Traverse Flutes, Oboe, and Violin; Concerto in G Major – soloists/Holland Baroque Society/Alexis Kossenko – Channel Classics
The works on the current CD are apparently not new to disc, but they’re new to me, and my first reaction is that they very enjoyably paint the portrait of Telemann as musical chameleon.
SCHUBERT: Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D. 759 “Unfinished”; Symphony No. 9 in C Major, D. 944 “The Great” – Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (No. 8)/ Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/Wilhelm Furtwaengler – Naxos Historical
Electrifying Schubert from the legendary Wilhelm Furtwaengler, remastered to astonishing effect – perhaps the best Schubert you will hear this year.
Olivier Manchon and Orchestre de Chambre Miniature, Vol. 1 – ObliqSound
As trumpeter Dave Douglas observed recently: “This whole jazz/not jazz thing is a 20th century problem. In the younger generation…it’s not even part of the equation.”

Alfred Hertz and The San Francisco Symphony = LISZT: Les Preludes; WAGNER: Parsifal: Prelude Act I; Good Friday Spell; Tristan und Isolde: Prelude, Act I and Liebestod; BRAHMS: Hungarian Dances No. 5 – Pristine Audio
Particularly noted for his affinity for the music of Wagner, these 1925-1928 Hertz inscriptions testify to a fierce orchestral discipline and vivid sonority in each of the selections.
Editorial for March 2010
Welcome to Adobe GoLive 6 For March, our drawing/giveaway is for two titles from the audiophile label Groove Note: The Jung Trio in Dvorak’s Piano Trio in F minor, and guitarist Anthony Wilson’s Jack of Hearts album. They come in both hybrid SACD and vinyl versions and the latter consists of two super-fidelity 45 rpm 12" discs. The six winners we draw will each receive one of the titles in both formats, so tell us in the Comments whether you prefer jazz or classical. Comparisons will be most interesting. To be eligible as a winner you must Go Here to Register, and be sure to also give us your address, and perhaps a comment about your interest in the Groove Note drawing. The two lucky winners of the 8-DVD Jazz Icons Vol. 4 set from Reelin’ in the Years – our February drawing – were: Rita Sonnleitner, Rio Rancho, NM & Diego Malpede, NY, NY. Congrats to both!
