Aggressive and experimental instrumental music for guitar fans.
“The First Seven Years” – Yarlung Records Sampler [TrackList follows] – Yarlung
Most enjoyable classical sampler CD I’ve heard in years.
George Duke – DreamWeaver – Heads Up
An invigorating contemporary album filled with expressiveness.
The Hours Begin to Sing: More Songs by American Composers = JAKE HEGGIE: From the Book of Nightmares; DAVID GARNER: Vilna Poems; JOHN CORIGLIANO: Three Irish Folksong Settings; GORDON GETTY: Four Emily Dickinson Songs; LUNA PEARL WOOLF: Rumi: Quatrains of Love; WILLIAM BOLCOM: Five Cabaret Songs – various perf. – Pentatone Classics
A sequel every bit as fine as the first go-round.
Constance Keene, piano = RACHMANINOFF : Corelli Variations; MACDOWELL: Six Fancies; Sonata No. 4 in E Minor, “Keltic”; To a Wild Rose; CHOPIN: 4 Ballades; GLUCK: Melody from Orfeo; CHASINS: Rush Hour in Hong Kong – Constance Keene, p. – KASP
A recital by virtuoso Constance Keene from Houston, 1995 reminds us that she once substituted in concert for Vladimir Horowitz, and justly so.
MILHAUD: Le bouef sur le toit for Four Hands; DEBUSSY: Petite Suite; FAURE: Dolly; DUREY: Two Pieces – Maurizio Moretti & Angela Oliviero, piano 4 hands – Camerata
A fine recording of some material that deserves much more.
JOACHIM RAFF: Symphony No. 2; Four Shakespeare Preludes – Suisse Romande/ Neeme Jarvi – Chandos
A good but not exceptional recording and performance of this now obscure Swiss composer.
DVOŘÁK: String Quartet No. 12 in F Major; SMETANA: String Quartet No. 1, “From My Life” – Tokyo String Q. – Harmonia mundi
The Dvořák is a little low-key at the start, but the playing heats up, and the Tokyo give the Smetana a passionate reading.
WAGNER: Tannhäuser (complete opera, Dresden version) – Soloists/ Berlin Radio Choir/ Berlin Radio Sym. Orch./ Marek Janowski – Pentatone Classics (3 discs)
With the next project the glorious Ring cycle, Janowski completes the canon with admirable fortitude and commendable intelligence.
“THEA MUSGRAVE: Chamber Works for Oboe” = Night Windows for oboe and piano; Impromptu No. 1 for flute and oboe; Impromptu No. 2; Cantilena; Niobe for oboe and pre-recorded tape; Trio; Take Two Oboes; Threnody for English horn and piano – var. performers – Harmonia mundi
Drama, either abrstact or more programmatic, shapes Thea Musgrave’s instrumental music.
DMITRI TYMOCZKO, “Crackpot Hymnal” = The Eggman Variations; Typecase Treasury; This Picture Seems to Move; Another Fantastic Voyage – Corigliano Q./ John Blacklow, p./ The Amernet Q./ Illinois Modern Ens./ Daniel Schlosberg, p./ Stephen Taylor – Bridge
Some very exciting new music with an eclectic approach.
The Harris Group – Errands – Self
A nice blending of shading and consistency.
STRAVINSKY: Le Sacre du Printemps – New York Philharmonic/ Leonard Bernstein – Sony Classical
Sony reissues Leonard Bernstein’s classic 1958 account of the Le Sacre du Printemps in full regalia – booklet, cover art, and memoirs galore – and the performance still dazzles.
Miserere: A Sequence of Music for Lent, St. Joseph, and the Annunciation – Westminster Cathedral Choir/ Martin Baker – Hyperion
Another stylish and well-planned program, this time mixing old and fairly new.
Music for the Heart = LISZT: 6 Consolations; 3 Sonetti del Petrarca; Funerailles; MENDELSSOHN: 2 Songs Without Words; BONUS: LISZT: “The Sad Monk,” – Bridget de Moura Castro, narr./ Luiz de Moura Castro, piano
Castro plays a live recital (19 May 2012) for the American Liszt Society Festival.
“Gustavo Núñez: Bassoon Capricho” = KEES OLTHUIS: Caprichio; JUARÉS LAMARQUE PONS: Concertino de Verano; VILLA-LOBOS: Ciranda das Sete Notas; GUBAIDULINA: Concerto – Gustavo Núñez, bassoon /members of Royal Concertgebouw Orch./ Ed Spanjaard, Kees Olthuis – Channel Classics
A bit too much clowning around, especially in the overlong Gubaidulina piece, but the playing is smart, virtuoso in spades.
Patrick Lamb – It’s All Right Now – Patrick Lamb Productions
Soulful jazz from the Northwest!
