This is an excellent three-part miniseries that ran on commercial TV, and covers the life of Robert “Bobby” F. Kennedy, with Brad Davis in the title role. All of the actors are first rate in their roles – Ned Beatty shining as J. Edgar Hoover and Jack Warden as Joseph Kennedy Sr. I had forgotten many of the details of the challenges Bobby Kennedy had faced in dealing with Lyndon Johnson, Hoover, the governor of Mississippi, the Pentagon brass, and especially Khrushchev in the horrendously scary Cuban Missile Crisis.  The situation of the entire world seemingly hanging in the balance during the latter crisis is very well portrayed.

Bobby Kennedy’s growth is shown as he progresses from junior congressman to being the Attorney General.  His steadfast standing up against racists, military hawks and others sets an example for all politicians. His standing on the side of justice made the civil rights effort successful, seemingly against all odds.  Then with the fateful assassination of his brother JFK in 1963 – portrayed at the end of the Part 1 – he was forced to continuing fighting for their vision of what was right, now all on his own. Which sadly only lasted until his own assassination.

B&W news footage of some of the important events is skillfully integrated into the color footage of the dramatizations. Altogether this may be one of the best films on the Kennedy family.
